この度、TAKU SOMETANI GALLERY では、今回で2回目となるNimyu個展
を開催いたします。前回の個展では、 “Fruit and Leaves Series” “Bone Skin Flesh Series” “Unclear Waves Series” の3シリーズを発表し大変好評を得ました。今回の個展では、その3つのシリーズを融合した作品「Bone and Fruit, Unclear Waves（骨と果実、不透明な波）」や、AIをテーマにした新たなシリーズを含む新作を発表いたします。是非この機会にご高覧頂ければ幸いです。
Nimyu is a Chinese artist based in Tokyo. She received her BFA in painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and her MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art in New York. Through various media, including painting, video, and installation, Nimyu delves into the intricacies of our information-driven society and the subtle control mechanisms that shape our understanding of the world. Her goal is to emphasize the profound influence of information, challenge the reliability of narratives, and explore the complexities of personal identity. Nimyu’s work promotes a contemplative dialogue that stimulates critical thinking and a deeper understanding of how information is received and processed.
In 2022, Nimyu held her solo exhibition “Invisible Ark; Where is the Other Shore You Want to Reach?” at Taku Sometani Gallery in Tokyo. Prior to that, she had three solo exhibitions at MOUart Gallery in Beijing; “Don’t Ask Me” in 2017, “The Wound of The Bond” in 2016, and “IRO IRO” in 2015. Her debut exhibition “Refracted Beings” was held at Fuse Gallery in New York City in 2012. A two-time recipient of the Atami Project Art Grant, Nimyu’s work has been exhibited in prestigious venues around the world, including the White Rabbit Museum (Sydney, Australia), The Scope Art Fair (Basel, Switzerland), Mansour Museum of Art (Los Angeles, USA), Urban Art and Media Organization (Munich, Germany), The Jack Pelican in Brooklyn (New York, USA), Sloan Art (New York, USA), the An Yun Art and Design Center (Shenzhen, China) and the SxV Museum of Modern Art (Qingdao, China) to name a few.
Nimyuは、東京を拠点に活動する中国人アーティスト。 北京の中央美術学院で絵画の学士号を、ニューヨークのニューヨーク・アカデミー・オブ・アートで絵画の修士号を取得。絵画、ビデオ、インスタレーションなど様々なメディアを通して、情報化社会の複雑さや、私たちの世界認識を形成する微妙な制御機構を掘り下げている。彼女の目標は、情報の深い影響力を強調し、物語の信頼性に挑戦し、個人のアイデンティティの複雑さを探求することにあります。Nimyuの作品は、批判的思考を刺激し、情報がどのように受け取られ、処理されるかをより深く考えさせる瞑想的な対話を促します。
2022年には、東京のTaku Sometani Galleryで個展「Invisible Ark; Where is the Other Shore You Want to Reach?」それ以前には、北京のMOUart Galleryで2017年に「Don’t Ask Me」、2016年に「The Wound of The Bond」、2015年に「IRO IRO」と3回の個展を開催している。2012年にはニューヨークのFuse Galleryでデビュー展「Refracted Beings」を開催。 Atami Project Art Grant を2度受賞したニミューの作品は、他にもWhite Rabbit Museum collection（オーストラリア）や Scope Art Fair Basel（スイス）、Masur Museum （ロスアンゼルス）、Urban Art and Media Organization （ドイツ）、 Jack the Pelican Presents、Limner Gallery、Sloan Fine Art（すべ てニューヨーク）、An Yun Art and Design Center（深圳、中国）、SxV Museum of Modern Art（青島、中国）など世界中で発表されています。
Artist Statement
I usually gather inspiration from various sources, such as observation, memory, literature, dreams, or artificial intelligence.
I encountered chaos and many errors when using the artificial intelligence image generation system at first. Instead of correcting them as I normally would, I’ve found a way to accept and appreciate the imperfections and limitations of AI. In the “Feed Me Up” series, I used AI to generate images of “humans eating different things”. Then, I transformed the AI images containing the errors into new perspectives; using my imagination and artistic skills to create unique paintings. Through this exploration, I reflect on the nature of imagination and its role in artistic expression. I invite the viewer to consider the profound impact of information and technology on our perception and understanding of the world.
“Bone and Fruit, Unclear Waves” merges my previous series of paintings. It continues to question the credibility of information, revealing hidden truths and suggesting how information impacts us. Incorporating the subjects of my paintings from recent years, the work attempts to explore the dilemmas we face in the midst of ongoing global issues and how we can cope with them.
私は普段、観察、記憶、文学、さらには夢や人工知能など、さまざまなソースからインスピレーションを集めています。
人工知能による画像生成システムを使った当初は、カオスと多くのエラーに遭遇しました。通常のようにそれらを修正するのではなく、私はAIの不完全さや限界を受け入れ、抱擁する方法を見つけました。「Feed Me Up」シリーズでは、AIを使って「人間がいろいろなものを食べている」画像を生成。そして、エラーを含むAIの画像を新たな視点に変換し、想像力と芸術的スキルをあわせる事でユニークな絵画を制作しました。この探求を通して、私は想像力の本質と芸術表現における役割について考えます。私の作品は見る人に、情報とテクノロジーが私たちの知覚と世界の理解に与える深い影響について考えるよう呼びかけるのです。
「Bone and Fruit, Unclear Waves（骨と果実、不透明な波）」は、私のこれまでの絵画シリーズを統合したもので、シリーズを通し情報の信頼性を問い続け、隠された真実を明らかにし、情報が私たちにどのような影響を与えるかを示唆します。近年、私自身が描いた絵画の題材を取り入れたこの作品は、現在進行中の世界的な問題の中で私たちが直面するジレンマと、それらにどのように対処していくかを探ろうとしています。
